POLY HOLISTICS AND THE SHIMLA MARATHON
(Curiously the around the time the Holistic Marathoners were sitting in their Volvo from Janpath TO Victory Tunnel, Shimla, Himachal Pradesh >This group of Art / MediaTeachers& Students, were getting onto a bus at St.Andrews Bus Station at Edinburgh to reach SeaGate Bus Station Dundee,Scotland). So our Polytech was really jetsetting this time. Two groups of students that set off on divergent routes and for diverse purposes!
Dear Holistic Marathoners,
Before getting onto the Volvo for Shimla, please ensure you have these things in your baggage:
1) Remember, we are doing an overnight journey>PLEASE DRESS DISCREETLY!
a. Avoid capris/spaghettis/sleeveless off shoulder tops/short skirts.

Retrospective Footnotes:
(1)The only ‘dim’ part of our trip was collecting on the back side of Chandralok building under the only roadside lamp. Thank God! For the chivalrous office staff and parents/siblings of students’ ,who lingered and made the ‘wait’ secure.
LESSON LEARNT: Never catch the bus at Chandralok building.FAR better to go to Himachal Bhavan with its paved and spacious venue.
(2)On the return journey>The girls were hyper-eager to catch their bus back to Delhi.(Perhaps,to brandish their gleaming medals and snazzy certificates!).
Consequently ,they were ‘3hours before’ ready and packed downstairs at the foyer. The Porters were also called…The teachers didn’t have the heart ‘not to start off for the busstop.(Finally the lovely walk thought the Ridge and Mall Road-admiring the Xmas lights of Shimla Town. Debating, whether Shimla is more beautiful at dawn or sunset?...)
Gazing for the last time at the richly coloured wildflowers and ferns(why don’t the Delhi flowers have these glorious colours?) …
However, once we reached the Victory Tunnel it was horrrrrrrid!!!!!
LESSON LEARNT: The Volvo bus is caught at the edge of highway. A very busy highway with a precarious mountainside. There is just no point waiting there,(although it is far better than the slushy cacophonic city bus station.) Sheer sordid waste of time!It’s too dark to read. Too noisy to converse.Quite a scene ,in short;
>Reach there only ‘half-an’ hour’ before.
Misc>>(3) Do not miss your free breakfast at the YMCA dining hall. ambience, history ,wholesome food and ofcourse lovely views from the windows!
(4)The123 yrs old Gaiety Theatre now have a lovely guided tour ,every second hour.
Visit the second oldest ‘still functioning’ theatre in the world!(The oldest is in La Pareee)
(5) It’s a lovely 4kms or so walk up to the Viceregal Lodge. Lots of postcards at their souvenir shop.
(6) Go down attractive Annandale, skirt Golfcourse >onto Army museum and walk up Kali Bari temple.(Looks more like a monastery than a mandir .The walk is really steep but so bewitching amidst the giant deodars and the silence of the skies.Plus you see some lovely cottages and bungalows….
(7) Delicous fruity ‘Jam and chutneys’ available on the mall Road shops. All time favourites include: Apple and cinnamon, plum and lime.
(8) The famed Himachal apples are not found in the bazaars of Shimla. They are obviously sent elsewhere, for a good price.Go for the other fruits like apricots and pears. These are really sharbati and succulent.
(9) Alas! The famed traditional Himachal woven borders are not available ‘on their own’.They are now attached to caps, waistcoats, shawls ,coats, etc.
Contact SDPW Polytech’s 44 yrs old Textile & Apparel Design Department and learn to weave them yourself !!!
10) If you are a ‘car-sickness’ type of person, remember going down or the ‘way back’ you are going to feel more dizzy and nauseous( three times more!)than on the way up. Wise,to have an early meal and not have a relook’ at the contents, in front of your fellow passengers!
